There are indications of military mutiny in Burkina Faso as there were sporadic shootings at military bases in Ouagadougou, capital city of Burkina Faso and other bases in the early hours on Sunday morning.
However, forces loyal to the government is trying to put down the mutiny.
With ugly developments in Burkina Faso since the demise of President Blaise Compaore and the resurgence of President Thomas Sankara’s philosophies, predominantly by the youths, coupled with developments in neighbouring Mali, still basking in a coup trajectory, with ECOWAS sanctions hitting hard, the sporadic shootings this morning are indicative of a likely uprising and the hallmarks of a likely coup d’etat
Defence Ministry has issued a press statement that ” relative calm has been restored and the President has been taken to a safe custody”. Whatever the reasons for sporadic shootings this morning, Burkina Faso is on a threshold of imminent crisis.
Further details revealed that “all the six military camps are involved in the uprising.” Alll the those involved have been arrested and under investigation “, revealed Defence Ministry source.
The situation now in Burkina Faso is tense and precarious, with hallmarks of anger among the populace.
It is clear that the Burkina authorities are preventing the mutiny by soldiers this morning, to develop into a successful coup d’etat, similar to neighbouring Mali and Guinea.
The mutiny by the soldiers is premised on a six point agenda, among which include, the resignation of the President Kabore, better conditions of service, improvement of standards of living, among others….
President Kabore has been whisked away to an undisclosed safe custody, relative calm restored, while the mutineers have been arrested.
Burkina Faso, former Upper Volta, but renamed by late President Thomas Sankara, was plagued into turmoil since his death in 1987. Since 2015, over 2,000 deaths have been recorded in ISL – related attacks, with millions displaced.
Surrounded by countries with successful coup leaders, 5 successful coups in all 3 countries, Mali, Niger and Guinea, it’s not surprising that Burkina Faso , today, has degenerated into a coup – trapped cubicle, with its people in the streets of Ouagadougou celebrating a mutiny, prevented by the authorities to develop into a successful coup.
