The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC) has approved the elevation of 68 legal practitioners to the prestigious rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).

The appointments were ratified on Thursday, July 23, 2026, during the committee’s 174th Plenary Session, chaired by the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Hon. Justice Kudirat Motonmori Olatokunbo Kekere-Ekun, GCON.
The outcome highlights a competitive selection process. Last month, the LPPC shortlisted 77 applicants under the Advocates Category and 12 under the Academic Category, while inviting public comments regarding their integrity, reputation, and competence. Following final deliberations, 10 lawyers from the Advocates Category and 11 candidates from the Academic Category were dropped, leaving 67 successful advocates and a single academic appointee.

The official announcement was released by Kabir Eniola Akanbi, Esq., Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court and Secretary to the LPPC. In the statement, the LPPC emphasized that conferment of the rank is a mark of professional excellence awarded to practitioners who have demonstrated exceptional distinction in court advocacy or legal scholarship.

Key Directives and Guidelines
Mandatory Induction:

In line with directives from the Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria (BOSAN), all prospective conferees must attend and complete a Pre-Swearing-In Induction Programme prior to formal conferment. The date will be communicated in due course.

Adherence to Ethics Rules:

Pursuant to Paragraph 25(1) of the LPPC Guidelines and Rule 39(3) of the Rules of Professional Conduct (2023), candidates are strictly forbidden from publishing or encouraging advertisements, congratulatory messages, or goodwill notices regarding their nomination. The committee warned that violations will attract statutory and ethical sanctions.
Swearing-In Ceremony: The formal swearing-in ceremony for all 68 conferees is scheduled for Monday, October 12, 2026.
