- To be buried in father’s compound in On do town on August 27, 2021
The family of late human rights crusader, Chief Gani Fawehinmi SAN on Thursday announced that the death of Mohammed, the first son who died last week, was caused by COVID-19 complications.
Saheed, his brother and second son of the family disclosed this at a briefing organised by the family in Lagos.
This is as a former Deputy Head, Gani Chambers, Mr Tayo Oyetibo SAN revealed that the late Mohammed actually dreamt of competing in Olympics before the accident that confined him into a wheelchair.
Providing details about his brother’s death, Saheed said the family could not immediately disclose the cause of Mohammed’s death because “we wanted the information to be based on factual medical details especially as maybe contained in the death certificate”.
He said further: “Today, however, we are in a position to inform you that our dear brother died from COVID-19 related complications. Arising from this, we want to urge all Nigerians to take necessary precautions to avoid being infected by the deadly disease, including, but not limited to taking the required doses of COVID-19 vaccine”.
Oyetibo, the founder of Law FM, said that Mohammed’s death hit him like a thunderbolt. Oyetibo, like the Fawehinmis, is from Ondo town. He worked under the late Chief Fawehinmi and rose through the ranks to become Deputy Head of Chambers before leaving to set up his own law firm.
He said: “He was a sportsman. In actual fact, he was a Sprinter. I recalled that in the late eighties, his Dad, Chief Fawehinmi, was preparing him to participate in the Olympics. Unfortunately, he got involved in a motor accident which marked a turning point in his life as he became confined to a wheelchair;
Though immobilized, his socio-politico-economic mentalization remained one that could be said to be of high level attitude status. He did not allow his precarious condition to dampen his spirit. He remained active politically and professionally. Mohammed had a friendly and charming character. He was highly respectful and humble;
As a legal practitioner, he was brilliant and innovative. As a political activist, he was moderate. He has played his part in this planet and the Lord who called him home at this time knows best. No man chooses the time of his exit from this planet. May the heavens receive his soul in peace. I commiserate with the Chief Gani Fawehinmi family as well as the Gani Fawehinmi Chambers Alumni of which Mohammed was a member”.
The burial rites for the late Mohammed will begin on Wednesday August 25, 2021 at the Archbishop Vining Memorial Hall, Ikeja, Lagos with a service of songs and night of tributes. He remains will be buried on Friday August 27, 2021 at his father’s compound in Ondo town.
