NBA Abuja Chairman, Dr Hauwa Shekarau dies

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Abuja branch on Wednesday announced the death of its chairman, Dr Hauwa Evelyn Shekarau.

In a release signed by the branch Publicity Secretary, Ikemefuna Onyeka, Dr Shekarau died in the early hours of Wednesday, September 15, after a brief illness.

The statement reads: “The NBA Abuja branch (Unity Bar) regrets to announce the untimely demise of her Chairman Dr. Hauwa Shekarau who passed on this morning 15th September, 2021 after a brief illness;

It is our prayer that God will grant her eternal rest; give her immediate family, associates and NBA in general the fortitude to bear this great loss;

Burial arrangement will be communicated to us as soon as the family announces;

Members are also notified that condolence register has been opened at the branch secretariat located at flat 2, Block 16, FCDA Quarters, Kashim Ibrahim Way, off Aminu Kano Crescent, Wuse II, Abuja”.

Barrister Hauwa Evelyn Shekarau was a distinguished Chevening Alumnus, gender advocate, human rights activist, a professional Mediator and Conciliator and a lawyer with over 25 years post-call experience in women’s rights advocacy, conflict resolution, social research, and consultancy.

She obtained her first degree in law from the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria Nigeria in 1991 and had her Law School professional training at the Nigeria Law School, Victoria Island, Lagos. She was thereafter called to the Nigerian Bar in December 1992.

Ms. Hauwa Evelyn Shekarau was the National President of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA Nigeria) between 2012 and 2015, where she was responsible for providing leadership for the professional organization which has State branches spread all over Nigeria.
