More than 60 lawyers under the auspices of the NBA AGC Legal Aid Clinic opened an outreach on August 28, giving free legal advise to the members of the public at the ongoing conference in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The practitioners comprises of representatives from both government and private rights organizations collaborating to provide free legal advice to people selling their goods and services at the mammy market at the AGC. The legal aid clinic was declared opened by the Chair, NBA Human Rights Institute, Chino Obiagwu SAN.
Volunteer lawyers visited the mammy market calling on the sellers to take advantage of the free legal aid clinic. Calls where made in English, Igbo, Hausa, Yoruba and pidgin.
The free legal aid clinic is the second of it’s kind. It began in Lagos under the leadership of the then 1st vice president of the NBA, John Aikpokpo-Martins and the Body of Vice Chairmen.
This year’s intervention is led by the NBA – HRI in Partnership with *NBA-SPIDEL AND THE 1ST, 2ND AND 3RD VICE PRESIDENTS of the NBA
Collaborators of this initiative include the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria (LACON), the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) with support from JURITRUST CENTRE, PILP, IIDEA RoLAC Program, DSN, FIDA,AWLA,*among others.
Services provided for free include the following:
- Advice on Landlord and Tenancy
- Advice on Contracts
- Advice on starting a new Business
- Advice on taking loans
- Advice on marriage and matrimonial disputes
- General Mediation and Reconciliation of disputes
- Domestic Violence & Trafficking in Persons
- Persons living with Disability & Child Rights issues
- Child Custody and maintenance
- Employer/Employee Disputes
- Consumer Protection
- General Human Rights violations
The legal aid clinic runs from the 27th – 30th of August from 10am daily at the NBA AGC Legal Aid Clinic stand opposite the AGC Mammy market next to the registration booths.
