NDLEA Seizes 115.226kg of Illicit Drugs, Arrests 149 Suspects in Ebonyi

Abakaliki, Oct. 16, 2024 (TheGavel) — The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Ebonyi State Command has reported a significant crackdown on drug-related activities, seizing 115.226 kilograms of various illicit substances and arresting 149 suspects during the third quarter of 2024.

Mr. Peter Ogar, the State Commander of NDLEA, provided details of the operations in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Abakaliki. He revealed that the arrests and drug seizures occurred in multiple locations across the state between July and September.

Ogar stated, “The Agency in Ebonyi also counseled 82 suspects during this period, comprising 64 males and 18 females.” He further elaborated that among the 149 suspects arrested, 112 were males and 37 were females, with ages ranging from 26 to 72 years. “These figures represent both drug dealers and users, as well as traffickers,” he added.

The seized substances included a variety of drugs, such as:

  • Crack Cocaine: 0.0023kg
  • Cannabis Sativa: 55.492kg
  • Codeine Syrup: 0.393kg
  • Tramadol Tablets: 0.004kg
  • Tramadol Capsules: 0.437kg
  • Diazepam (917 Tablets): 0.964kg
  • Methamphetamine: 0.0054kg
  • Bromazepam (75 Tablets): 0.034kg
  • Lorazepam (476 Tablets): 0.100kg
  • Monkey Tail: 56 litres (42.2kg)
  • Raphynol (24 Tablets): 0.009kg
  • Other Psychotropic Substances: Totaling 115.226kg

During the reporting period, Ogar noted that one individual was convicted for drug-related offenses. He also highlighted the agency’s efforts to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse, stating, “We conducted sensitization campaigns targeting youth groups and community leaders to address the need to end drug abuse and trafficking.”

The NDLEA Commander reiterated the agency’s commitment to combating illicit drug trafficking not only in Ebonyi but across Nigeria. He mentioned, “We carried out sensitization programs in primary and secondary schools in several local government areas of the state.”

Ogar concluded by expressing gratitude for the cooperative relationship between the NDLEA and other security agencies, emphasizing the importance of a united front in the fight against drug-related crimes.(NAN)
