Akure, Oct. 7, 2024 (TheGavel) – Maj. Gen. Kevin Aligbe, Commander of the Nigerian Army Training and Doctrine Command, has issued a stern warning to junior officers, stressing that failure will not be tolerated during the 2024 Captain to Major Practical Promotion Examination (CMPPE). The high-stakes exam, which began on Monday in Akure, is a key determinant for career advancement in the military.
Aligbe, who presided over the opening ceremony, reminded the officers that their performance would directly influence their eligibility for the Junior Staff Course at various staff colleges, both in Nigeria and overseas. Over 200 captains from different formations across the country are participating in the promotion exercise, which serves as a critical evaluation of their leadership capabilities and readiness for higher responsibilities.
Addressing the officers, Aligbe emphasized that the CMPPE is not just a routine assessment but a decisive moment in their military careers. “Let me assure you all that this is an examination you can pass without resorting to illegal or fraudulent means,” he said. “It is therefore important that you put in the seriousness and determination that would produce the best result.”
He further reiterated that the officers’ progress within the Nigerian Army (NA) would be significantly influenced by their performance in this examination. “The examination is not just a mere assessment, but an assessment of your present level of proficiency, as well as a determination of your capabilities to undertake higher responsibilities that may be assigned to you now and in the future,” Aligbe stated.
Highlighting the extensive training many of the officers had undergone in various operational theaters, Aligbe underscored that they should be fully prepared for the exam. “Therefore, there should be no excuse for failure, and I expect nothing short of 100 percent pass in this examination,” he declared.
In his welcome address, Maj. Gen. Obinna Onubogu, General Officer Commanding (GOC) 2 Division, expressed gratitude to the Nigerian Army headquarters for selecting the division to host the 2024 CMPPE. Onubogu assured the participants that the division had made comprehensive administrative, logistical, and security arrangements for the smooth conduct of the exams.
He also emphasized the importance of the examination in strengthening junior leadership within the army, noting its direct link to national security objectives. “The importance of this examination towards building the capacity of junior leadership in order to achieve national security objectives cannot be over-emphasized,” Onubogu remarked.
Although Akure is currently experiencing relative peace, Onubogu advised the participants to remain vigilant, as the security situation could change. He warned them to avoid disclosing information that could compromise their safety during the examination period. “The security situation in Akure town is relatively peaceful but unpredictable. Therefore, you are advised to be security conscious and cautious of where you go,” he said.
The CMPPE is expected to conclude with results that will determine which officers will advance to the rank of major, marking a crucial step in their military careers. (NAN)
