Nigeria’s insurance guru, ‘Tony Aletor celebrates diamond with 12 baskets of praise

Nigeria’s insurance guru, and Vice Chairman, Capital Express Group, Chief Anthony Aletor will tomorrow, August 17, 2022 celebrate his 60th birthday with a 12 hour praise to God.

The event tagged 12 Baskets of Praise will be held at the Olive Tree Parish of the Redeemed Christrian Church of God(RCCG), Banana Island, Lagos. The event is billed to feature gospel singers such as Yinka Alaseyori, Laolu Gbenjo, Bidemi Olaoba, Tosin Bee, Dotun Sax, Chigozie Wisdom, and a host of other artists.

Chief Aletor was born on August 17, 1962 in Lagos to Edo State born parents. He began his primary school education at St Patrick’s Catholic School, Bacita, Kwara State after which he proceeded to Lagelu Grammar School, Ibadan, where he obtained his West African School Certificate in 1980. He proceeded to Oliver Baptist High School, Oyo for his Higher School Certificate(HSC) which he obtained in 1982.

He was admitted to the University of Lagos in 1982 to study Insurance. He graduated in 1985 and went to University of Ibadan for his masters degree.

Chief Anthony Aletor began his insurance career at Sentinel Assurance Company Limited as Head, Marketing before moving to Crusader Insurance Plc where he rose to the positions of Branch and Regional Manager within two years. He then became the Managing Director of UTIB Insurance Brokers Limited and Capital Express Insurance Company Limited in 1991 and 2000 respectively.

Under his leadership, Capital Express assurance limited  acquired thirteen life insurance portfolios of other insurance companies and merged with Regency Insurance Life portfolio to create one of the biggest life assurance companies in Nigeria, culminating in a name change to Capital Express Assurance Limited.

He has a degree in Insurance from the University of Lagos, an MBA from the University of Ibadan and is a certified member of the Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers; the Chartered Insurance Institute (London); and the Association of Pensions Fund Managers. He sits on the board of  notable companies including Consolidated Hallmark Insurance Plc.

An alumnus of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, Jos, Plateau State, Chief Aletor attended several courses in insurance, wealth management, and money markets.

A silent achiever and philanthropist, he rehabilitated the football field, and constructed a modern sports complex comprising pavilion, basketball court, volleyball court, handball, two lawn tennis courts, a standard football pitch with a modern covered sitting pavilion for all the games at NIPSS.

Chief Aletor also built an ultra-modern boarding school with a 600-bed hostel capacity  in Gwada, Niger State for boys and girls to serve Gwada and its neighboring villages and towns. The school has a 600-capacity church, multipurpose hall, theater complex, library, classroom blocks, science laboratories, agricultural laboratory, music laboratory staff quarters and a sports arena. The school which is being built in phases is donated to the Catholic Diocese of Minna, Niger State who runs the school currently.

In 1992, he established the United Pastoral Foundation(UPF) as a philanthropic non-governmental organization for the execution of  philanthropic endeavors. The organization has over the years provided scholarships to students at all levels of education (primary, secondary, and tertiary) nationwide. UPF also sponsored the rehabilitation of street urchins in Victoria Island especially the Bar Beach area by pulling the addicts and runaways through a rehabilitation programme that gets them off drug abuse, learn a trade and further their education. United Pastoral Foundation also supports the less privileged, orphans and widows through a revolving entrepreneurial scheme that gives free grants to set up small scale businesses.  

As an active member of the Lagelu Grammar School, Ibadan Old Boys Association, he was the Chief Host of the Golden Jubilee Celebration in 2008. His immense contributions led to raising funds for the huge success of the 50th Anniversary programmes.  

In 2018 he was unanimously saddled with the responsibility to chairman the 60th Diamond Anniversary of his alma mater where he raised over N350 million for the renovation and rebuilding of all the school’s infrastructure. Some of the projects were the new school gate with a 3-km tarred road, renovation of the school hall, modernisation of the clinic, dining hall, school auditorium, new classroom blocks (storey building), and a personal donation of a digital library amongst others. This made the school to take its place of pride amongst schools in the whole of Oyo State and the entire country.

This led the leadership of the Alumni Association to confer the highest title and honor of Grand Distinguished Lagelite (rarely given out) on him for his outstanding and exemplary leadership qualities.The late Governor of Oyo State, Abiola Ajimobi was so elated at the commissioning of these facilities that he urged all old boys of other schools in Oyo State to emulate Lagelu Grammar School Old Boys Association.

Chief Aletor holds the chieftaincy titles of Aare Basorun Parakoyi of Ibadanland, conferred by Olubadan of Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Saliu Akanmu Olasupo Adetunji, Aje Ogungunniso, the Aradakan of Owo Kingdom, conferred by The Olowo of Owo, His Imperial Majesty, Alaiyeluwa Oba Ajibade Gbadegesin Ogunoye III, and Ci Garin Hausa conferred by The Emir of Daura, His Royal Highness, Alhaji (Dr.) Umar Farouk Umar.

Chief Aletor is married to Mrs Olayinka Titilope A let or and they are blessed with children.
