Kano State, Sept. 27, 2024 (TheGavel) – In a major political development in Kano State, no fewer than 1,331 members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area have defected to the ruling New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP). The mass defection, which occurred on Thursday, is seen as a significant boost to the NNPP’s strength ahead of future elections in the state.
The defectors, who hailed from 11 wards across Dawakin Tofa, expressed their dissatisfaction with the APC and pledged their full support to the NNPP, vowing to work against the return of the APC as the ruling party in Kano State.
Among the notable figures who left the APC are Malam Kwa, the former Vice Chairman of Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area, and Hon. Audu Tumfafi, a former aspirant for the Kano State House of Assembly.
Receiving the defectors at a well-attended ceremony in Dawakin Tofa, the Kano State Chairman of the NNPP, Hon. Hashimu Dungurawa, praised them for their decision to join the party. Dungurawa reaffirmed the NNPP’s commitment to the socio-economic and infrastructural development of Kano State under the leadership of Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the party’s national leader.
Dungurawa assured the new members of equal opportunities within the party, dismissing rumors of an exodus of NNPP members to the APC.
“We have learned that one APC man has been receiving members of the NNPP into the APC. We have checked the roll call of our members and we have not noticed any reduction in our numerical strength,” Dungurawa stated.
He further cautioned the public about deceitful individuals seeking to take advantage of political movements, saying, “I need to advise them to beware of 419 people coming to collect public funds in the name of decampees.”
Speaking at the event, Malam Kwa, one of the prominent defectors, criticized the leadership of former Kano State governor, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, who is also from Dawakin Tofa. Kwa accused Ganduje of neglecting the development of their local government area during his eight-year tenure as governor.
Kwa further alleged that Ganduje’s mismanagement of the APC in the state contributed to his inability to secure the House of Representatives seat in the 2023 general elections.
The defection of these APC members to the NNPP is expected to intensify political competition in Kano State, as the NNPP continues to solidify its presence under Kwankwaso’s leadership. The mass defection comes at a critical time, with the NNPP seeking to maintain its political dominance in the state. (NAN)
