Professor Okello Oculi, a prominent political scientist, has called on the leaders of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to clearly define their commitment to political morality. In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja, Oculi emphasized the need for African leaders to choose between a morality centered on serving the public or one focused on exploiting and squandering resources.
Oculi, a Uganda-Nigerian academic and Executive Director of the Africa Vision 525 Initiative, expressed concern over the increasing frequency of military coups in Africa despite the growth of democratic institutions. He argued that many African leaders seem to misunderstand the essence of democracy, noting that genuine democracy cannot exist where elections are manipulated and leaders extend their terms beyond democratic norms, as seen in Guinea.
He criticized leaders who cling to power, describing them as potential dictators who often engage in repressive regimes marked by extrajudicial killings of political opponents, dissidents, and journalists. Oculi urged these leaders to abandon their “sit-tight” agendas and adhere to democratic principles.
Regarding ECOWAS’s handling of breakaway states, Oculi cautioned against punitive measures such as cutting off electricity and trade relations, which could exacerbate existing problems. He recommended negotiations to resolve conflicts and prevent adversarial countries from exploiting the situation.
Oculi also advocated for strengthening transborder business within ECOWAS by promoting free movement of goods and addressing corruption at border security checkpoints. He highlighted the importance of media and non-governmental organizations in educating and empowering the youth across ECOWAS nations to foster regional integration and leadership.
Reflecting on the role of Ecobank Transnational Inc. and pan-African banking, Oculi stressed the need for effective regional resource mobilization to support such initiatives. He proposed leveraging media and educational programs to inspire young Africans and enhance regional development and unity.
The Africa Vision 525 Initiative, founded by Oculi, aims to prepare young people for leadership roles through educational projects and research. The initiative has evolved from its origins at Ahmadu Bello University to secondary schools, training students to understand and engage in African politics and leadership.
Oculi’s vision includes mobilizing youth to drive progress and integration across the continent, thus reinforcing Africa’s collective strength and unity.
