Personnel of the Nigeria Immigration Service have arrested a man in possession of a handgun at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, aboard a United Airlines flight from Houston, United States of America.

The Lagos Airport Comptroller, CIS Kemi Nandap, said based on a credible intelligence report, they were notified that the passenger heading to Nigeria from Houston had concealed a firearm in his luggage.

The spokesman of the NIS, Amos Okpu, in a statement said: “Upon arrival, we declared him as a person of interest and contacted the Customs Service for a search of his luggage. The handgun and 26 rounds of 9mm ammunition were recovered from him.

“The passenger with dual nationality of Nigeria and the United States is currently undergoing further interrogation to determine his intentions of bringing in the firearm.”

As a result, “the acting Comptroller General of Immigration, Isah Jere Idris, has called on travellers to always comply with accepted best practices while embarking on any foreign trip to avoid any form of embarrassment,” the statement noted.
