The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Governor Siminalayi Fubara, demanding his resignation or threatening impeachment proceedings. The call was made by the party’s chairman, Chief Tony Okocha, during a press briefing in Port Harcourt on Monday.
Okocha cited a recent Supreme Court judgment as the basis for the demand, insisting that the ruling must be respected. He criticized Governor Fubara for what he described as punitive actions, including summoning members of the State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, for discussions on the judgment.
According to Okocha, the governor’s invitation to the lawmakers was inappropriate, as it coincided with a scheduled Assembly sitting on March 10. He alleged that Fubara’s discussions with the legislators revolved around their remuneration, the venue for their sittings, and the state budget, rather than focusing on the Supreme Court ruling.
“Governor Fubara had no right to summon the Assembly to discuss the Supreme Court judgment. His role is to present the budget to them, not to interfere in their legislative duties,” Okocha stated.
The APC chairman further accused Fubara of disregarding President Bola Tinubu’s eight-point agenda for peace, which he claimed was an insult to the president and the party. “As an opposition party in Rivers State, we cannot sit idly by while Governor Fubara disobeys Mr. President. For us, this is unacceptable,” he added.
Okocha warned that the Supreme Court’s findings were sufficient grounds for the governor to step down, describing Fubara’s position as precarious. “He is already sitting on a keg of gunpowder,” Okocha remarked.
Despite his criticisms of the governor, Okocha commended Speaker Amaewhule and the members of the House of Assembly for maintaining their stance and upholding their responsibilities.
