Sapele Foundation mourns death of Peter Fregene

A Niger-Delta group, The Memories of Sapele Foundation has expressed sadness over the death of Nigeria’s legendary goalkeeper, late Peter Fregene who died in Sapele, on October 13, 2024 at the age of 77.

In a statement signed by its secretary, Mr Raymos Guanah, the foundation said that the late goalkeeper’s exploits in the field inspired a generation of footballers from Sapele.

“The Memories of Sapele Foundation, a non profit organization dedicated to preserving and celebrating the rich cultural and sporting legacy of Sapele,is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Peter Fregene, a renowned goalkeeper who proudly represented Nigeria’s national football team during the 1960s and 1970s”, it stated.

The President of the Foundation, Prof Hope Eghagha said: “We are devastated by the loss of this iconic sports hero. Peter Fregene’s exceptional skills in goal inspired a generation of football enthusiasts, and his legacy will continue to be celebrated.” As a proud son of Sapele, Peter Fregene’s achievements on the national stage brought joy and pride to the community. His contributions to Nigerian sports will never be forgotten”.

The Foundation extended its heartfelt condolences to the Fregene Family and the entire nation during this difficult time. May Peter Fregene’s gentle soul rest in peace.
