A senior Lagos lawyer, Chief Kunle Uthman has commended Lagos State government for putting an end to the activities of beggars, hawkers, and demolishing shanties on the Lekki-Epe coastal road, saying that “it is gratifying to note that government is keen on fulfilling the wishes of taxpayers”
On August 1, 2021, Lagos State Task Force moved to the area, demolished shanties built on the road by miscreants, and dislodged them from the area. Few days after, the miscreants came back, rebuilt their illegal shanties. This prompted the taskforce to raid the area, arrested over 30 miscreants and arraigned them in court.
Chief Uthman, a member of the Body of Benchers gave kudos to the government on the move. He said the proactive move of government will put a stop to the menace, harassment and victimisation of motorists and commuters by hawkers, beggars and destitutes on Lagos roads but more specifically the Lekki / Epe Expressway, from afternoon till night;
Most alarming is the sight of women carrying babies, destitute, beggars and unemployed youths spraying windscreens with liquid soap, all with the intention of extortion. The fact that many government officials commute on this road everyday shows the latitude agencies involved in maintaining sanity on our roads;
This road grants access to Elegushi beach, Akodo, VGC, Badore, Ajah, the Free Trade Zone, Lagos Business School, estate of serving judges and others, thereby making it a very busy road. In the recent past, tolls were collected from commuters by the infamous Lekki Concession Company(LCC)”.
He urged the state government to further act expeditiously in order to further fulfil the concomitant indexes of a megacity and not a lawless zone which shows neglect and lack of pro activity by government parastatals and agencies.
“There is imperative urgency for government to surreptitiously deal decisively with this problem in different parts of the State and establish rehabilitation centres to train these persons and make them useful citizens to their families and society-at-large.
