Stockholm, Sweden, Oct. 18, 2024 (NAN) – Nigeria is set to intensify its efforts to find sustainable solutions to its transportation challenges by collaborating with global industry players to implement cleaner, more efficient transport alternatives.
Vice-President Kashim Shettima emphasized this during a strategic visit to the Scania headquarters in Södertälje, Sweden, on Thursday. Scania, a world leader in providing innovative transport solutions, hosted the Vice President as part of a broader initiative to deepen ties between Nigeria and Sweden in the area of green transportation.
The visit, according to Shettima, aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s agenda to transform Nigeria’s transport sector by focusing on cleaner energy alternatives such as Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and biofuel solutions. “Nigeria will continue to explore viable and sustainable solutions to address its transportation challenges while working closely with private sector partners to achieve the best possible outcomes,” Shettima said during the tour.
The facility tour and engagement at Scania were designed to assess Nigeria’s potential as a market for green transport solutions and explore avenues for deeper collaboration between the Swedish company and Nigeria. The discussions centered around innovative approaches to easing Nigeria’s transport problems, particularly in the areas of heavy-duty trucks and buses that could help modernize the country’s transportation infrastructure.
Scania’s Head of Sales for Africa, the Middle East, and Central Asia, Mr. Fredrik Wijkander, led the tour and discussions. He highlighted the company’s expertise in delivering sustainable and energy-efficient transport solutions, which could play a pivotal role in Nigeria’s efforts to adopt greener technologies in its transport sector.
Shettima’s visit to Scania is part of his two-day working trip to Sweden, which also included a closed-door meeting with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson. The talks further focused on strengthening bilateral relations and exploring opportunities for sustainable development between both nations.
The push for cleaner transport aligns with Nigeria’s broader environmental goals and its commitment to reducing emissions, ensuring that the nation’s economic development moves hand in hand with responsible energy consumption.
