The Federal government has restated the importance of Cybersecurity training for Judges in Nigeria, describing it as fundamental and beneficial.
The Permanent Secretary and Solicitor General, Federal Ministry of Justice, Mrs Beatrice Jedy-Agba made the statement on Monday while declaring open a 5-days Train the Trainers Programme on Cybercrime and Electronic Evidence For Judges and Prosecutors.
The programme was Organised by the Federal Ministry of Justice, Crime West African Response on Cybersecurity and Fight Against Crime (OCWAR) and the Global Action on Cybercrime.
The training is in conjunction with the European Union (EU).
Represented by the Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation, Mr Mohammed Abubakar Babadoko, the SGF noted that despite its attendants challenges like cybercrime, digital transformation according to her has redefine life.
She therefore advocated needs for countries of the world to build capacity of stakeholders on the use of electronic evidence and enactment of cyber legislation to tackle it.
“As member state that is following to the letter the Budapest framework, Nigeria appreciate this partnership and support for Judges as the training is not only fundamental but also beneficial,” Agba stated further.
While also giving a remark, Senior Project Officer, Council of Europe GLACY + Project, Coshina Menghes said the organisation strongly support Nigeria attempt to end cybercrime in line with the Budapest convention.
The training she added would strengthen Nigeria’s capacity to reduce cybercrime which according to her is already threatening the political system.
With adequate support via capacity building programme, she noted further that Nigeria which according to the United Nations Projection is number 7th country globally in terms of absolute internet users is poised to be a leader in combating cybercrime.
Speaking at the training, the European Union delegation, Dr. Sabrina Mekaoui expressed the EU continued support for Nigeria, saying effort is on to encourage international cooperation to stem inter- cybercrime.
