The Supreme Court has dismissed claims that Justice Emmanuel Agim accompanied the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to the University of Calabar’s 2025 convocation ceremony. Instead, the court clarified that Justice Agim attended the event in his capacity as an honouree and alumnus of the institution.
In a statement issued on Monday in Abuja, Dr. Festus Akande, the Director of Information and Public Relations for the Supreme Court, explained the circumstances surrounding Justice Agim’s attendance. According to Akande, the University of Calabar Governing Council had selected Justice Agim for an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Law (Doctor Honoris Causa) to recognize his outstanding contributions to the legal profession.
“Justice Agim attended the convocation ceremony on Saturday, March 22, 2025, as an esteemed honouree and alumnus of the institution. His recognition highlights his commitment to justice, integrity, and the rule of law, serving as an inspiration for aspiring legal professionals and students alike,” Akande stated.
The court also clarified that Justice Agim had originally been scheduled to attend the burial ceremony of Justice Stanley Alagoa in Bayelsa State alongside other Supreme Court Justices but sought permission to attend the convocation instead.
Dr. Akande emphasized that Justice Agim participated in the convocation independently and not as a representative of any government ministry or department. “Any insinuation to the contrary is not only inaccurate but undermines the judicial independence that is crucial to our democracy,” Akande added.
The statement urged the public and media to verify information before dissemination to avoid spreading misinformation.
The Nigerian Constitution upholds the separation of powers, ensuring that judicial officers remain independent and free from political interference. Section 292 of the 1999 Constitution highlights the responsibility of judges to conduct themselves in a way that upholds public confidence in the judiciary.
While it is acceptable for judges to attend academic and professional events, any perceived association with political figures, even if unintentional, can raise questions about their impartiality. This situation shows the need for clear communication and transparency in judicial activities to avoid misunderstandings that might undermine public trust in the justice system.
