Dutse, September 25, 2024 (TheGavel) – The Jigawa State Independent Electoral Commission (JISIEC) has announced that three political parties have fielded a total of 321 candidates for the upcoming October 5 local government election. This was disclosed by the Executive Chairman of the Commission, Mr. Auwalu Harbo, during a press briefing held in Dutse on Wednesday.
According to Harbo, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has the highest number of candidates, fielding 27 chairmanship candidates and 287 councillorship candidates. This places the APC as the dominant party in the election. Meanwhile, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has put forward two chairmanship candidates and three councillorship candidates, while the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has also fielded two chairmanship candidates for the election.
The chairman further revealed that the commission had completed all preparations for the election and had recruited 14,794 ad hoc staff to ensure the smooth conduct of the exercise. These staff members have undergone thorough training to handle various responsibilities during the electoral process, with the goal of delivering an efficient and well-organized election.
In terms of logistics, Harbo mentioned that 95 per cent of both sensitive and non-sensitive election materials have been provided by the commission. This is to ensure that all necessary equipment and resources are available to guarantee the success of the election. He emphasized that the commission is fully committed to conducting a free, fair, and credible election that reflects the will of the people.
Harbo also assured the public that adequate security measures have been put in place to ensure a peaceful and hitch-free election across the state. This includes collaboration with security agencies to maintain law and order throughout the election period, ensuring the safety of voters, election officials, and candidates alike.
As the state gears up for the election, the political atmosphere in Jigawa is expected to intensify in the coming days, with candidates from all three parties working to secure the support of the electorate. (NAN)
