Abuja, Oct. 9, 2024 (TheGavel) – President Bola Tinubu has extended heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu on her election as President of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC). Shinkafi-Bagudu, elected on Oct. 8, becomes the first African and the fifth woman to lead the global cancer control organization.
In a statement by Bayou Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Tinubu hailed the historic significance of her election, affirming that it attested to her competence, character, and the wealth of talent in Nigeria. He praised her remarkable leadership and contributions to health initiatives, both in Kebbi State and across the country.
Tinubu highlighted Shinkafi-Bagudu’s pioneering work as Chairperson of the First Ladies Cancer Initiative and her role in creating the Kebbi State Strategic Plan for Cancer Control. He also noted her leadership of the Medicaid Cancer Foundation and her advisory role to the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare.
Under Shinkafi-Bagudu’s guidance, Nigeria has successfully vaccinated 12 million girls against the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), a leading cause of cervical cancer. Furthermore, Tinubu’s administration has allocated N37.4 billion to establish six cancer centres across the country, to be completed within two years.
The UICC, based in Geneva and founded in 1933, has over 1,100 member organizations in more than 170 countries. Tinubu expressed his confidence that Shinkafi-Bagudu’s leadership will advance cancer control efforts and improve global health. (NAN)
