Ibadan, September 20, 2024 (TheGavel) – An Iyaganku Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan has remanded two individuals, Sanda Umaru (22) and Usman Yahaha (28), in a correctional facility for alleged armed robbery and kidnapping.

The defendants, both without fixed addresses, were charged with conspiracy, armed robbery, and kidnapping. Magistrate Mrs. M. Olagbenro declined to take their pleas due to lack of jurisdiction and directed that the case file be returned to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice. The case was subsequently adjourned until November 14th for a mention hearing.

According to the prosecution, led by Inspector Elisha Tellang, the defendants allegedly committed the crimes on July 30th at approximately 2:00 AM in Alaguntan village, Igbope, Ibadan, Oyo State. Armed with guns and other dangerous weapons, they allegedly attacked the complainant, Abubakar Umaru, and robbed him of his cell phone.

Furthermore, the defendants are accused of kidnapping Umaru and demanding a ransom of N50 million from his brother, Musa Umaru. The alleged offenses violate Sections 6(b), 1(2) of the Robbery and Firearms Laws of Nigeria 2004 and Section 4(2) of the Oyo State Kidnapping Law, 2016.

The remand of the defendants signifies the severity of the alleged crimes and the need for further investigation. The case will now proceed to the DPP for legal advice, which will determine the next course of action.

The adjournment of the case to November 14th allows for the completion of necessary legal procedures and the gathering of additional evidence. It also provides an opportunity for the defendants to seek legal representation and prepare their defense.(NAN)
