Abuja, Sept. 23, 2024 (TheGavel) — The U.S. government has announced humanitarian assistance for victims of the recent devastating floods in Maiduguri and surrounding areas in Borno State.
In a statement released by the U.S. Embassy in Abuja, officials expressed their sorrow over the disaster, which has resulted in loss of life, widespread property damage, and the displacement of numerous families. “The United States is deeply saddened by the devastating floods that have affected Maiduguri and other parts of Borno State. We extend our condolences to the victims, their families, and all those impacted by this disaster,” the statement read.
The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is mobilizing resources to assist those affected through collaboration with UN agencies and implementing partners. Specifically, USAID is providing hot meal rations via the World Food Programme (WFP) to four camps hosting internally displaced persons (IDPs). Over the past few days, assistance has reached more than 67,000 individuals.
In addition to meal provisions, the WFP is offering emergency nutrition assistance to pregnant and lactating women, as well as children under five years old. The embassy noted that the International Organization for Migration (IOM) is utilizing an initial $3 million in USAID funding to address flood-related needs across the country.
USAID is also supporting the United Nations Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS) in executing food airlifts to hard-to-reach areas in Borno and Maiduguri to tackle urgent needs. “Other USAID-funded partners, including international and local NGOs, are repurposing existing funds to provide critical assistance to individuals affected by the flooding in Maiduguri and neighboring Jere Local Government Area,” the embassy added.
The U.S. Embassy commended the bravery and resilience of the Maiduguri community, along with the tireless efforts of first responders, aid workers, and local authorities who are delivering essential services during this crisis. “Our thoughts remain with the people of Borno during this challenging time,” the statement concluded.
According to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the floods have resulted in more than 30 fatalities and displaced over 400,000 people in Maiduguri. The disaster was triggered by the collapse of the Alau Dam, which had reached full capacity. Following the flooding, the Borno state government has opened several IDP camps to accommodate those affected. (NAN)
