Ugandan Court releases Nigerian artists, Omah Lay and Tems

Two days after the arrest of popular Nigerian musicians, Omah Lay and Tems, a Ugandan court has ordered their release from the prisons in Kitalya and Kigo respectively, where they had previously been remanded.

Their release was thankfully facilitated quickly as the prescribed punishment for their alleged offence under Ugandan law is 7 years imprisonment and they may have been forced to face even more embarrassment.

During the few days both artists spent in detention, Nigerian celebrities campaigned massively for their freedom, trending hashtags such as #FreeOmahLay and #FreeTems, which undoubtedly mounted pressure on the Ugandan authorities to order their release.

However, reports on Twitter state that while these two artists were battling for their release after supposedly flouting COVID-19 guidelines, the Uganda President, Yoweri Musoveni, made moves to hold political campaigns, attracting a number of people that definitely is not in line with the same COVID-19 guidelines.

Nigerians have expressed joy at the release of the artists and the controversy surrounding the arrest has since ended.
