Ibadan, Nigeria (TheGavel) – The Students’ Union of the University of Ibadan (UI) has rejected the recent school fees increment approved by the institution’s governing council. In a bold move, the students staged an overnight protest from 10:20 pm to 2 a.m. to express their disapproval.

The union leaders, President Bolaji Aweda, Vice-President Bolutife Aboderin, and Secretary Daniel Elemide, issued a statement rejecting the new fees. “We reject the decision made by the council. We are embarking on a boycott of classes until our demands are fulfilled. We demand a reversal of the increase. The students demand that the school fees portal should be shut down within 24 hours until our demands are met.”

The students are urging their peers to utilize social media platforms to mobilize support using the hashtags #UIFEESMUSTFALL and #SAVEUITES until their demands are met.

The governing council’s decision, announced on Thursday, increases school fees for students from 100 to 400 levels and sets a deadline for payment. The council advised students who have not completed their registration to do so by September 4.

In response to the students’ concerns, the council suggested exploring financial aid options like the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) and various scholarships offered by the university and other benefactors.

The council emphasized that there will be no extension of the registration deadline, and the portal will be closed after the specified date.

This protest follows a previous demonstration in July, which led to a temporary suspension of the payment deadline.
