Mr Tolulope Adeusi

Adeusi, Chairman of TG Marchnata, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday, said that the current labour law in the country did not protect employers.

According to him, the weakness of the labour law allows an employee who defrauded his or her employer to easily change job without any form of punishment. Adeusi noted that the labour law should be reviewed in such a way that it will be difficult for any employee who defrauded his or her employer from getting a new job in the country.

“The labour law need a change to favour and protect the investment of the entrepreneurs. It is sad that an employee will defraud his or her employer and there is no labour law to stop such person from getting another job base on his or has fraudulent records;

“Why should someone who committed a crime in an organisation that is helping the society to keep people out of poverty be allowed to get another job somewhere else? Many companies that are leaving Nigeria due to unpleasant business environment and unattended issues of operations that are within the system;

“In America, if you commit a crime, it will go into your record and because of that you cannot be employed anywhere else based on the fraudulent record and this can be replicated in Nigeria. I believe that the ability of an employer to provide an employment is a strong position and should be protected by law against fraud;

“Fraudulent employee should pay severe penalty for trying to disrupt the operation or the existence of businesses that are trying to keep the economy alive,” he said.

Adeusi said although employers of labour usually report fraudulent employees to the appropriate authorities but the outcome was not always pleasant to the employer.

He said that the labour law which prevents fraudulent banker from getting another job in another bank sector should be extended to all sectors for their survival.

“Let’s change the labour law a bit and see if fraudulent activities of employees will not be minimised. Once employee is aware that if he or she commit a fraud in any organisation, the record will not allow him to get job anywhere, then people will be forced to behave well,”, he said.
