Woman Arraigned for N1.23 Million Fraud

Kaduna, September 17, 2024(TheGavel) – A 40-year-old woman, Stella Godwin, has been arraigned before a Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court on charges of fraud. Godwin, a resident of Old Kamazo, Kaduna, pleaded not guilty to the allegations.

The prosecution, led by Inspector Chidi Leo, informed the court that the defendant committed the crime between January and August in Sabon Tasha, Kaduna. Godwin, an employee of Grace Multi Dynamic Investment Limited, is accused of fraudulently converting N1.23 million of her employer’s funds for personal use.

The prosecutor argued that the defendant’s actions violated Section 241 of the Kaduna State Penal Code, which prescribes a five-year jail term for anyone found guilty of such an offense.

Leo requested an adjournment to study the case file and gather witnesses. The defendant’s counsel, Samson Timothy, urged the court to grant bail, promising that Godwin would not abscond.

Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel granted bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum. The sureties were required to be gainfully employed and provide evidence of three years of tax payment to the Kaduna State Government.

The case has been adjourned until October 9th for further hearing. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of financial accountability and the consequences of fraudulent activities.(NAN)
