Court sentences randy ex Unilag lecturer, Baruwa to 21 years imprisonment

An Ikeja High Court on Thurday sentenced a former part-time lecturer at the University of Lagos, Akoka, Mr. Afeez Baruwa to 21 years imprisonment for raping an 18-year-old girl who was seeking admission into the University.

Baruwa was convicted on one count charge of rape leveled against him by the State Government.

The convict allegedly raped the victim inside a study room, when she was seeking admission into the University.

While delivering judgement yesterday, Justice Josephine Oyefeso held that the prosecution has proven his case beyond a reasonable doubt and therefore found the defendant guilty of the charge .

The judge held that the defense counsel in his allocutus also said that rape is an offence of life imprisonment if found guilty. He thereafter pray to court to temper justice with mercy.

Stating that the convict is a married man with four kids age 12, 10, 4 and 2 years old children. The convict has his aged parents to cater for. He is a first time offender.

The judge said, she cannot begin to imagine the emotional trauma of the girl, the convict offended his family, the victim, the society and God. “Baruwa I hereby sentenced you to 21 years imprisonment. This is my judgment.”

The prosecution alleged that the former lecturer raped the teenager at 9.25a.m. on July 23, 2015, in Room 8, the Faculty of Business Administration Annex building, UNILAG.

Baruwa, who was a friend of the teenager’s father, was requested by the man to help his daughter to secure admission into the institution. The alleged rape occurred when she was in Baruwa’s office to make arrangements for her admission into the university.
