The American businessman argued that Manchester United’s global reputation provides a strong financial foundation, allowing the club to maintain its commercial appeal even when results on the pitch are below expectations.
To support his position, Glazer cited Major League Baseball’s New York Yankees and the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys, noting that both organisations have retained significant commercial value despite going through lengthy periods without winning major trophies.
He suggested that Manchester United possess a similar global brand appeal, which helps shield their commercial operations from the impact of inconsistent performances.
His comments are reminiscent of those made by former executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward in May 2018, when he told investors that results on the pitch had little bearing on the club’s commercial activities.
“Playing performance doesn’t really have a meaningful impact on what we can do on the commercial side of the business,” Woodward said at the time.
Glazer’s position comes at a challenging moment for Manchester United, who have endured a difficult run of results. The club recently brought a nine-match winless streak to an end with a 3-2 comeback victory over AS Roma in the Champions League at Old Trafford.
Despite the European victory, United remain dangerously close to the Premier League relegation zone, with goal difference keeping them above the bottom three.
Manager Michael Carrick remains under pressure as the club prepare to welcome Aston Villa in their next Premier League fixture.
