Ogun Crime Watch has called on the Nigeria Police Force to question Nollywood actor Kunle Afod over a video in which he reportedly criticised the emergency response to Friday’s road accident at Saapade on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.

In a statement issued by its president, Olumide Martin, the group claimed that Ogun State emergency responders arrived at the scene at 12.28pm, while Afod reportedly shared the video at 12.29pm, just one minute later.

According to the organisation, emergency personnel were already attending to victims when the footage was published online.

It urged the police to establish when the video was recorded, examine the circumstances surrounding its publication and determine whether any laws were breached.

Ogun Crime Watch alleged that the video was intended to portray the state government’s response negatively, undermine public confidence in its emergency services and serve the interests of political opponents.

The group maintained that its call for an investigation was not an attempt to undermine freedom of expression or legitimate criticism of government. However, it argued that public statements concerning emergencies should be accurate and responsible.

The accident involved a Mazda bus conveying 18 passengers. The vehicle reportedly suffered a tyre burst before crashing into a concrete barrier near Saapade.

Thirteen passengers sustained injuries and were taken to hospitals for medical attention.

Ogun Crime Watch expressed sympathy with the injured passengers and their families, wishing those receiving treatment a speedy recovery.

It also appealed to motorists to observe speed limits, avoid dangerous driving, maintain their vehicles properly and comply with regulations issued by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

The organisation further urged public figures and social media influencers to verify information before publishing reports about emergencies, warning that inaccurate accounts could trigger unnecessary panic and weaken public confidence in emergency responders.
