Oyo State Governor and Allied Peoples’ Movement (APM) presidential candidate, Seyi Makinde, has urged Nigerians to accept money offered by politicians during election campaigns but vote according to their conscience.
Makinde made the appeal on Saturday during the APM presidential campaign flag-off in Bauchi, where he called on Nigerians to support the party’s proposed reset agenda.
The governor identified hunger, insecurity and a lack of inclusiveness as some of the major challenges confronting the country.
“Don’t bother at all when they bring money; it’s your money. Collect it, spend it, but vote your heart. And I know your heart is with us and with APM,” he said.
Makinde urged Nigerians dissatisfied with the country’s current situation to support the APM, arguing that the party’s proposed agenda was designed to address the nation’s challenges.
Also speaking at the event, the party’s vice-presidential candidate, Lawal Daura, criticised what he described as the politics of deceit and hypocrisy, saying such practices posed a threat to Nigerian democracy.
Daura said the APM’s reset agenda would promote honesty, accountability and inclusive governance, irrespective of citizens’ religion, ethnicity or background.
Bauchi State Governor and APM national leader, Bala Mohammed, said he and Makinde left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) because of what he described as injustice within the party.
Mohammed said Makinde’s proposed reset agenda and plan for a government of national unity would address tribalism, religious intolerance and exclusion in governance.
The APM National Chairman, Yusuf Dantalle, also said women would have greater opportunities to participate in politics if Makinde was elected president.
