In the wake of a violent downpour of rain on Thursday morning at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ife, Osun state, the school’s prominent Amphitheatre was heavily affected as the roofing of the building came crashing down on students, while a class was ongoing.

According to reports, at least five OAU students were rushed to the hospital following the incident.

Gavel International gathered that this occured during an SER 001 morning class, popular among Part 1 (100 level) students of the school.

In particular, one of the injured students is the general class representative for the course. He was reportedly unconscious as at the time of conveying him to the hospital for treatment.

The details and identities of the other injured students remains unknown.

Eyewitness accounts described the scene of the incident as one filled with chaos and confusion, as students ran to safety, while seeking emergency response for their other colleagues who had sustained more serious injuries due to the collapse.

Emergency medical personnel also reportedly arrived the scene swiftly to provide assistance and transport the injured to the hospital.

Reports also have it that university officials have launched an investigation into the incident to determine the exact cause of the roof collapse and assess the structural integrity of other buildings on the campus.

Additionally, classes have been suspended from holding in the affected area till further notice, to ensure the safety of students.
