The Ekiti State Police Command has dismissed reports that the African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, was kidnapped by armed thugs in Ado-Ekiti, saying he was involved in an altercation at a restaurant and subsequently rescued by police operatives.
In a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Abutu Sunday, the command said it had become aware of a message circulating on social media claiming that Sowore had been abducted and his whereabouts were unknown.
However, the police categorically denied the kidnapping claim, explaining that preliminary information indicated that the incident involved a confrontation between Sowore and some individuals at a restaurant around the Dalimore area of Ado-Ekiti.
According to the command, the police were alerted immediately after the altercation, prompting operatives to mobilise to the scene and rescue the politician.
The statement added that Sowore sustained a minor injury and was receiving medical attention at the Police Hospital in Ado-Ekiti.
The Commissioner of Police, Falade Adegoroye Michael, has ordered a discreet investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident, identify everyone involved and ensure that anyone found culpable is brought to justice.
The command urged members of the public to remain calm, disregard reports alleging that Sowore was kidnapped and avoid circulating unverified information capable of causing panic and tension.
It reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property across the state, irrespective of political affiliation, status or background.
