A disaster was avoided on Tuesday morning when a train plying Abuja-Kaduna pulled off half of its cars, and sped off with the remaining half, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded in the push.
One of the stranded passengers in a video explained in Hausa language, how the train pulled off the track and the other half jumped into another track. He was full of praises to Allah for averting what could have ended as a disastrous derailment.
The video showed the passengers, male and female, walking off the train cars in the middle of nowhere. They were however escorted by armed policemen and some people that wore reflective jackets, probably officials of the Nigerian Railway Corporation(NRC).
The accident may not be unconnected with the vandalization of the rail tracks by thieves who steal steel and boat components of the tracks. Another video shows loose boats on the track apparently stolen by vandals.
It will be recalled that terrorists attacked the Abuja-Kaduna train on March 28, 2022 and shot to death nine passengers and abducted over 60 others. It took more than a year of negotiations before many of the abducted passengers regained their freedom.
In December 2022, the Federal Government ordered the resumption of the train services on the premise that it has overhauled the security architecture to safeguard the lives of passengers. NRC recommenced additional train train services on the corridor on Sunday June 4, 2023.
