Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, has doubled the monthly state allowance for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members serving in the state from N10,000 to N20,000.
The governor also announced a one-off cash gift of N30,000 for each corps member currently participating in the orientation exercise.
Aliyu made the announcements on Friday during the swearing-in ceremony of the 2026 Batch C Stream II corps members at the NYSC Temporary Orientation Camp, College of Administration, Umaru Ali Shinkafi Polytechnic, Sokoto.
He said the increased allowance and additional financial support were part of his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of corps members and providing a conducive environment for their service.
The governor also approved the donation of a Toyota Hilux vehicle to the NYSC to strengthen its monitoring and supervision activities, particularly in areas with difficult terrain.
In addition, he pledged to provide five cows daily to feed corps members throughout the orientation exercise.
Aliyu also directed the management of the institution hosting the camp to urgently address challenges relating to electricity and water supply to improve conditions for the participants.
Speaking on the importance of the NYSC scheme, the governor said, “The role of corps members in promoting national integration and unity cannot be overemphasised.”
He further disclosed that his administration had committed more than N1 billion to the renovation and upgrading of the permanent NYSC orientation camp in Wamakko Local Government Area, adding that the project was approximately 90 per cent complete.
Aliyu assured the corps members that their security and welfare would remain a priority, while urging ministries, government agencies and other employers to accept corps members posted to their establishments.
