A ponmo seller in Akure, the Ondo State capital, has been arrested following the alleged discovery of buckets containing human faeces at a cowhide processing facility in the town.
The seller is expected to face prosecution after an environmental sanitation inspection team reportedly uncovered the substances at the facility, located on Igboliki Street, Akure.
A video circulating on social media showed the chairman of Akure South Local Government Area inspecting the premises.
The footage showed two buckets allegedly containing human faeces inside the processing centre, prompting the council chairman to order the immediate arrest of the seller and the sealing of the facility.
The discovery has raised concerns about hygiene standards in the processing and handling of ponmo, a popular cowhide delicacy widely consumed across Nigeria.
It has also sparked questions about the safety of cowhide products processed at the facility and whether any potentially contaminated products had already been distributed to markets for public consumption.
