The African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has criticised President Bola Tinubu over the worsening electricity situation in the country, accusing his administration of offering excuses instead of addressing persistent power supply challenges.

In a statement issued on Sunday by his senior media aide, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku said the President’s explanations for the electricity crisis could not provide power to Nigerians, adding that millions of households and businesses remained without reliable electricity.

He said Nigerians were tired of what he described as excuses and propaganda from the Tinubu administration, despite the rising cost of electricity.

According to the former Vice-President, the government has continued to justify its performance in the power sector rather than deliver stable electricity to consumers.

“Tinubu’s electricity excuses cannot light a single home. Nigerians need light, not excuses.

“Across Nigeria, consumers are placed in Bands A, B, C, D and E and charged different rates. In many areas, Band A customers pay about N209.50 per unit before VAT.

“Rates for the other bands vary by state and electricity provider. Yet across every band, the same hardship endures: the power fails, but the bill arrives.

“No family should have to weigh the cost of electricity against the cost of food. No business should be left to pay more while receiving less,” he said.

Atiku called on the Tinubu administration to stop politicising the electricity crisis and prioritise the provision of a stable power supply, saying Nigerians continued to bear the consequences of unreliable electricity.
